Making Decisions Series

The Making Decisions Series is a curriculum-based program for Grades 4 through 9 that delivers the drug prevention message through teaching life skills.

The program:

  • Equips students with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills they need to make informed decisions about alcohol and other drugs.
  • Teaches students how to be assertive, to think for themselves, and to recognize and deal with pressures and influences that lead to substance abuse.
  • Is the only program of its kind that addresses BC Ministry of Education Personal Planning K-7 and Career and Personal Planning Learning Outcomes.

Grade Four

The goal with this age group is to:

  • Provide age appropriate information about drugs and the nature of drugs
  • Raise awareness about the consequences of misuse.
  • Introduce the concept of responsible decision making that results in     positive consequences for the student’s health and well being.

Students learn about the use and misuse of both medical and non-medical drugs through the story of a curious alien, Zorga and his earthling friends.


Grade Six

This program teaches students to distinguish between their needs and wants, develop refusal skills, practice simple strategies for making sound decisions, and learn how their choices affect all aspects of their life.

  • The Importance of Needs and Wants
  • Exploring Products Advertising
  • Peer Influences
  • Family and Community Influences
  • Look, Think, Decide
  • Drugs and Drug Issues
  • You Have a Choice

 

Grade Seven

The program highlights decision-making, critical thinking, and goal setting skills. It provides opportunities for students to practice what they learn. Students explore alcohol, tobacco, and other drug issues through discussion, research, and class activities.

  • Decision Making: A Model
  • Drugs in Society
  • Peer Group Influences
  • Media Influences
  • The Choice is Mine

 

Grade Eight

This program focuses on the development of key skills in critical thinking, self-confidence and assertiveness. During these transition years when students face an increased pressure to use drugs, these modules promote healthy and positive adolescent development and learning.




Lesson Titles Include:

  • Making Decisions About Drugs
  • Learning the Facts About Drugs
  • Peer Influences to Experiment and Some Reasons to Resist
  • Social Problems, Social Solutions
  • Making Healthy Choices About Drugs

 

Grade Nine

This program focuses on the development of key skills in critical thinking, self-confidence and assertiveness. During these transition years when students face an increased pressure to use drugs, these modules promote healthy and positive adolescent development and learning.

  • Getting Information About Drugs
  • Drugs and the Media
  • Standing Up for Myself
  • Making Choices
  • My Future and Our Future
