Anti-smoking posters sweep province

.
The anti-tobacco posters and statements made by four young B.C. artists are being seen by almost 700,000 of their fellow students across the province.
More than 12,000 copies of the winning entries in the fourth “This is why I’ll never use tobacco” poster contest were sent this month to nearly 2,000 B.C. schools. The winners were chosen from more than 1,300 contestants from 88 schools, selected by a panel of judges from Alcohol-Drug Education Service and Health Canada, Tobacco Control, which co-sponsored the contest.
The first- and second-place winners attend schools in Abbotsford, Coquitlam, Fort St. James, Prespatou, Revelstoke, Richmond and South Surrey. The contest ran from mid-November until mid-January; contestants were asked also to submit a short paragraph, poem or essay stating why they would never use tobacco.
Competition was held in four grade-level categories: 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 and 10, and 11 and 12. First-place winners had their choice of a new iPod or digital camera; runners-up received a $50 Future Shop gift card; and those who earned Honourable Mention got Health Canada tote bags.
(Some of the best statements submitted by this year’s contestants, as well as the winning posters, are posted elsewhere on this website.)
“Most students were well aware of the negative effects of tobacco and were strong in their choice never to use it,” said Jean Fraser, A-DES board member. “They expressed a clear knowledge of the dangers of tobacco to the user, as well as to the environment and those around him or her.”
